Tropique is a Japanese platinum pendant centered by a 2.65-carat natural Australian black opal with an unusually warm multicolor display. Its design naturally reads as a pineapple: the elongated oval opal forms the body, while eleven staggered round diamonds rise above it like a crown of leaves. Even the opal’s broken flashes of color reinforce the resemblance, appearing in small, irregular sections across its dark surface like individual points of light.
The opal itself is the reason Tropique deserves closer attention. Measuring approximately 13.13 × 9.12mm, it presents an N3 black body tone with genuine full-spectrum play-of-color. In person, red and orange compete closely with green for dominance, joined by blue undertones and intermittent yellow and magenta. Rather than illuminating as one continuous sheet, the colors appear and disappear independently in compact sections as the stone moves, creating a twinkling effect against the dark body tone.
Photography is unusually conservative with this particular opal. Our images accurately represent its overall pattern and dark body tone, but the camera consistently favors green while understating the strength and frequency of its red and orange play-of-color. It also captures fewer individual color flashes illuminated at once than are typically visible to the eye. The sunlight video provides the closest available representation of its movement, though the stone remains noticeably warmer and more animated in person.
Its color is visible across a wide range of lighting, including softer indoor conditions, while brighter light increases both the viewing distance and intensity of the individual flashes. From one particularly favorable oblique angle, much larger portions of the opal illuminate simultaneously in full-spectrum color; from more typical front-facing views, its character is darker and more punctuated, with individual colors blinking in and out as the pendant moves.
Above the opal, eleven natural round brilliant-cut diamonds totaling approximately 0.35 carat are deliberately varied in size and staggered in height. Their bright white sparkle tends to register first from a distance, drawing the eye toward the pendant before attention settles onto the slower, colored movement within the black opal below. A hidden bail allows the chain to pass discreetly behind the diamond cluster, preserving the uninterrupted pineapple-like silhouette from the front.
Crafted in solid Pt900 platinum, Tropique measures approximately 23.13mm, or 0.9 inch, from the top of its diamond crown to the base of the opal and weighs approximately 3.56 grams without its chain. It was sourced through one of OpalPop’s established estate-jewelry sources in Narita, Japan. The reverse retains its original Japanese hallmarks, including “Pt900,” “2.65,” and “0.35,” recording the platinum purity, opal weight, and total diamond weight. The opal is Australian and is attributed, though undocumented, to Lightning Ridge. As an estate piece, Tropique shows slight eye-visible wear to the reverse of the pendant, consistent with prior use. Overall, it remains in excellent vintage condition.
