Crafted in Japan around the 1980s, Susan is a romantic vintage platinum ring centered by a 1.70-carat natural Australian semi-crystal opal. From above, the setting reveals a softly floral character: polished platinum forms curl below the opal like petals, while diamond-set split shoulders extend the nature-inspired design to either side. The result feels decorative and feminine without becoming overly ornate.
The opal itself is intimate in scale but unusually colorful. Its translucent N8 body carries a warm, rose-toned play-of-color that shifts between reddish pink and pinkish red rather than a single true pink. In softer light, those warm colors can mellow toward orange as green becomes more prominent, with subtle blue appearing beneath. Under brighter light, particularly sunlight, the rose tones strengthen while blue and occasional violet emerge through the semi-crystal body, giving the stone a distinctly springlike palette.
Rather than presenting one dominant flash, Susan’s color is scattered across the opal in smaller areas that appear and disappear with movement. The effect is lively and delicate, with warm and cool colors mingling across the stone rather than competing for attention. The opal is Australian in origin and is attributed, though not documented, to Coober Pedy.
Four natural round brilliant-cut diamonds are incorporated into the east-and-west shoulders, totaling approximately 0.06 carat. They function less as separate focal points than as part of the setting itself, adding small points of brightness among the platinum curves. Inside the shank, the original “Pt900”, “1.70”, and “D.06” stamps remain visible.
