A Late-Shōwa Black Opal Pinky Ring with Vivid Green-Blue Play-of-Color

Fuyu is a compact late-Shōwa Japanese platinum ring centered by a remarkably vivid natural Australian black opal. Measuring approximately 7.04 × 5.63 mm and estimated at around 0.90 carat, the opal faces up with a midnight-black N2 body tone beneath intense green and blue play-of-color. Distinct areas of color flash independently across the stone, varying in shape, size and character while appearing to extend unusually deep into its transparent body.
At size 4.50 US, Fuyu is naturally suited to pinky wear on many hands, while also offering a traditional ring fit for someone with particularly petite sizing. Its small scale is part of its character: rather than relying on physical size for presence, the ring concentrates an unusually bright black opal, platinum, and diamonds into a compact piece of vintage fine jewelry.
The opal also has an interesting natural optical character that becomes visible when viewed away from its face-up position. From the sides, portions of the precious opal become considerably more translucent, revealing its relationship with naturally occurring potch and matrix beneath. The underlying material is irregular and can be seen extending into portions of the crystal opal, while the underside retains a naturally uneven, pitted surface. Our white-background photographs intentionally document this structure from several angles as part of a complete view of the stone.
Surrounding the opal are four natural round brilliant-cut diamonds totaling 0.066 carat, channel-set two to each shoulder. Beneath them, hand-curled platinum filigree gives the gallery the lingering Art Deco influence frequently seen in Japanese Shōwa-era jewelry. Despite its compact proportions, the Pt900 setting feels solidly constructed and weighs approximately 4.21 grams.
Fuyu was sourced through one of OpalPop’s established Tokyo estate-jewelry sources. The interior of the shank retains its Japanese “Pt900” hallmark together with “D0.066”, recording the total diamond weight to the thousandth of a carat. The ring was subsequently professionally cleaned, its platinum polished and its stones checked for security by our Anaheim, California jewelry partner.
The opal shows only very light surface wear under close inspection, consistent with careful previous use and not readily apparent to the unaided eye. Overall, the ring remains in excellent vintage condition.
The opal is of Australian origin and is attributed, though undocumented, to Lightning Ridge. Its name, Fuyu (冬), means “winter” in Japanese, an understated reference to the ring’s cool blue-and-green palette.
