Valentine is a vintage Japanese platinum engagement ring centered by a 1.19-carat Australian dark opal with a distinctly romantic palette of red, orange, and magenta play-of-color. Against its misty N5 body tone, broad flashes of warm color appear and fade across the stone, joined by blue undertones and, in certain lighting, transitions from orange into yellow and green.
The effect changes noticeably with the light. In softer indoor conditions, the color can take on an almost metallic glow across the dark body tone. Direct artificial light can occasionally soften the contrast, while sunlight brings Valentine to life most dramatically, locking the red and orange into their brightest, most vivid expression. Warm red and orange play-of-color is especially prized in dark opal, making this color profile considerably less common than the blue- and green-dominant material more often encountered.
The opal’s play-of-color appears primarily in broad flashfire pattern, with larger directional sections illuminating independently as the ring moves. Its setting is equally distinctive. Four long tapered baguette diamonds create an angular framework around the oval opal, while ten round brilliant-cut diamonds complete a six-sided, almost hexagonal halo. Together, the 14 natural diamonds total approximately 0.34 carat and average VS clarity. The design is geometric without feeling severe, giving Valentine a refined late-20th-century Japanese character that bridges the Art Deco-influenced language of earlier Shōwa jewelry with the cleaner forms emerging in the 1990s.
Crafted in solid Pt900 platinum, the ring weighs approximately 5.58 grams and measures about 12.67mm across the top. The inside of the shank is hallmarked “Pt900,” “.34,” and “1.19,” recording the platinum purity, total diamond weight, and opal weight.
