Meet Tulip,
A Sculptural Late-Shōwa Opal Ring with a Nature-Inspired Platinum Setting
Crafted in Japan around the 1980s, Tulip is a sculptural platinum ring built around a remarkably thoughtful botanical design. Six natural diamonds rise from tulip-shaped settings along the split shoulders, staggered at different heights to create a three-dimensional arrangement rather than a simple mirrored pattern. Each side reverses the direction of the other, while curling platinum filigree and central leaf-like forms continue the garden motif beneath the opal.
At the center is a 2.35-carat natural Australian light opal with a color palette that changes distinctly with its environment. Under bright studio light, green becomes most prominent. In softer conditions, warm orange and yellow take the lead while green moves into a supporting role. In direct sunlight, pinkish-red play-of-color can become dominant, accompanied by orange and yellow with subtle flashes of blue. The opal is Australian in origin and is attributed, though not documented, to the Coober Pedy mining region.
The setting is where Tulip reveals its real complexity. The diamond heads project outward like individual blossoms, while the split platinum shoulders read as stems and leaves supporting them. Beneath the center stone, open filigree curls around additional leaf-like motifs, allowing the botanical idea to continue through the gallery rather than existing only as surface decoration. It is the kind of design that becomes more interesting as the ring is turned in the hand.
Inside the shank are the original “Pt900” and “235” stamps, corresponding to the platinum purity and inscribed opal weight, along with a stylized “X” maker’s mark whose designer remains unidentified. The ring has been professionally cleaned, lightly polished, and checked for security, with the center stone tightened as needed.
A small area of natural surface pitting is present along one lower edge of the opal where it meets the platinum seat, with minor polishing residue visible within some of the texture under close magnification. A few additional minute natural pits or inclusions are also present.
For someone drawn to jewelry with hidden structure and thoughtful design, Tulip offers more than its first impression suggests. It is also a distinctive choice for an unconventional opal engagement ring; because of the natural opal center, elevated profile, and four-prong setting, we recommend thoughtful special-occasion wear rather than continuous everyday use.
Current ring size 8.00 US.
