A Romantic Mid-Century Cocktail Ring with a Nearly Three-Quarter-Inch Opal
Patricia is a substantial vintage Japanese cocktail ring centered by a 7.97-carat natural Australian white opal. Measuring approximately 18 × 12.8mm, the opal gives the ring broad presence across the finger while retaining a soft, traditional character. Its N9 white body carries delicate play-of-color across nearly the entire stone rather than concentrating into a single directional flash.
In softer indoor light, Patricia is quiet and warm, with subtle orange and pinkish-red color moving across the opal alongside occasional green and blue. Under brighter light and sunlight, the pinkish reds become more prominent and blue strengthens considerably, joined by green, orange and flashes of yellow from sharper angles. The effect remains refined rather than intensely bright; this is a large opal whose appeal lies as much in its scale, even distribution of color and luminous white body as in raw brightness.
The setting is equally characteristic of mid-century Japanese platinum jewelry. Six natural diamonds totaling 0.22 carat are arranged across split shoulders, with one marquise-cut diamond framed by two round brilliant cuts on each side. Their slightly elevated, outward-facing placement allows the diamonds to contribute to the ring’s top-down silhouette rather than disappearing into the shoulders.
Beneath the opal, fine hand-curled filigree creates an open, romantic gallery. The solid platinum construction feels substantial at approximately 8.08 grams, while the shank carries an unusual frosted center stripe bordered by polished platinum. This textured treatment continues toward the split shoulders and has been observed on other older Japanese platinum rings of the period, giving Patricia additional visual detail even away from the center stone.
The interior of the shank retains its original “Pm”, “850”, “22” and “7.97” hallmarks, recording the platinum alloy, total diamond weight and opal weight. The “Pm” hallmark and Pt850-era construction support a conservative mid-century dating of approximately the 1950s. Patricia was sourced through one of OpalPop’s established Tokyo estate-jewelry sources and remains in very good original vintage condition.
The opal has a surface-breaking fissure near one edge, extending only a short distance onto the face of the stone. It can be difficult to notice in softer light but becomes more apparent from certain angles under brighter illumination. Because the fissure begins near a prong, its exact origin cannot be determined with confidence; it may be natural or may have occurred during an earlier setting process. The opal’s substantial thickness helps preserve the overall integrity of the stone, but this remains a vintage opal ring that should be worn with particular care and protected from impact.
