A Romantic Late-Shōwa Opal Ring with Sculptural Floral Platinum and Warm Play-of-Color
Luna is a vintage Japanese platinum ring centered by a 2.36-carat Australian light opal whose soft, warm play-of-color is complemented by an equally fluid floral-inspired setting. Measuring approximately 12.04 × 10.06mm, the semi-crystal opal has enough presence to feel substantial on the hand without crossing into oversized cocktail-ring territory. Four small natural diamonds serve as restrained accents, allowing the opal and sculptural platinum work to remain the focus.
Much of Luna’s character reveals itself through movement. Viewed directly from above, both the opal and the floral structure can appear relatively quiet. Shift the angle slightly, however, and broad reddish-orange and pinkish-red flashes begin moving across the stone while the platinum shoulders open into curling, petal-like forms around it. The ring was designed to be discovered from more than one viewpoint.
That directional quality makes Luna unusually engaging when worn. The strongest flashes are not always visible to the wearer at the same moment they are visible to someone across a table or passing nearby; a small change in viewing angle can suddenly bring warm color across much of the opal’s surface. It gives the ring a slightly unpredictable quality that can make it as interesting to those around the wearer as it is to the person wearing it.
Its color also changes with the environment. Indoors, the play-of-color is generally quieter but can appear more saturated and glitter-like, with concentrated reddish orange and pinkish red emerging at favorable angles. In sunlight, more of the stone tends to illuminate at once, although the effect becomes softer and more shimmery. Green can occasionally spread across broader portions of the opal as well, while blue and violet undertones remain visible through the translucent semi-crystal body. Flecks of yellow sometimes bridge the transition between the warmer orange and cooler green.
The setting is distinctly late-Shōwa in character. Flowing platinum forms rise around the opal in a nature-inspired arrangement that loosely suggests petals and leaves, while the gallery beneath incorporates layered curves and open details that become much more apparent from the side. The result is romantic without being delicate-looking: at 6.00 grams in solid Pt900 platinum, Luna has a reassuring sense of substance beneath its softer visual language.
The inside of the shank is hallmarked “Pt900,” “004,” and “2.36,” recording the platinum purity, total diamond weight, and opal weight. Luna was sourced through one of OpalPop’s established Tokyo estate-jewelry sources and dates approximately to the 1980s. It arrived in strong vintage condition and was subsequently cleaned, polished, and checked for stone security by our Anaheim jeweler. The Australian opal is attributed, though undocumented, to Coober Pedy.
