Simple in design, quite complex in nature—this handmade sterling silver solitaire ring features a true rarity: a natural Lightning Ridge dark opal with a shifting multicolor color profile. The camera does little justice for what really takes place inside of this magical, oval-shaped stone.
When viewing the Australian opal in the light, what initially appears to be a greenish color shifts as the ring is tilted, morphing into an orange, then finally a vibrant pinkish-red when viewed from the appropriate angle; this red is present both in bright light and low, ambient light environments. Yellow overtones accompany this transition. It is due to this rich, soft red play-of-color that the artist behind the ring fittingly named it, "Heart Light".
Handcrafted by a new, up-and-coming Pennsylvania-based opal cutter and silversmith, Michael Schaner, his passion for opal is clear in the quality and rarity of the material that he chooses to work with. Sourced directly from a leading Australian opal authority, the rough was imported to the U.S. and cut in Michael's private Lansdale lapidary studio. Visual imperfections do exist along the surface of the ring's bezel and shank; these are not the sign of previous wear, but rather the tooling marks of a small-studio indie designer practicing his craft.
